I sat with my mentor to examine an assessment tool we use. We examined one formative and one summative tool that we use in our work place. We valuated using the VASCR tool and reflected on Valid, Authentic, Reliable, Current and Sufficient. We also described how it could be improved
Our Formative and Summative assessment was based on workshop my tutor delivered on “How to coach disabled people in Sport” on 22nd October 2013
Formative Assessment method: Group work – during the workshop groups broke off to talk about why people take part in sports /and how to adapt sports for disabled participants. |
|
Valid | Yes – As the task allowed everyone to share their knowledge |
Authentic | Yes – as it the group were writing themselves and were using real life examples. |
Reliable | This could be questioned as in groups there may have only been one person leading and others not saying anything. However it also allows those who do not contribute as much to learn this way without feeling intimidated. |
Current | Yes – group work allows people to share up to date knowledge |
Sufficient | Yes within the context of the workshop which was an introduction course for learners to decide if this is what they want to do. However if the learner then wants to deliver and work with disabled participants more they would have to attend a longer course |
How can it be improved:Have the group talk about what they have discussed to the rest of the group and allow for Q&A from the class to take place |
Summative Assessment method: Questioning and Answering sessions along with evaluation sheet. |
|
Valid | Yes as it checked for understanding |
Authentic | Yes as people answered individually and the evaluation form was individual |
Reliable | This depends on previous experience of the learner. If you have a knowledgeable person they will always be reliable however a novice might not be and through Q&A to the group as a whole you may not pick up on this.Eval form should be reliable as it’s their own opinion and the name does not have to be put on.
|
Current | Yes as Q&A is based on lesson just delivered.Eval Form is updated regularly |
Sufficient | Yes given the timeframe of the workshop. Enough time to check for understanding. |
How can it be improved:Look at targeting Q&A at individuals to check if the outcomes have been achieved and they understand, rather than just advise the group what the outcomes were.
Next time we could also ask each individual at the end to write down 3 things they have learned from the session, this will allow us to check for understanding of the course. |
